Simple Ways I Practice Self-Care
Memorial Day Weekend always marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Although to be honest, in Atlanta we’ve had summertime temps for a few weeks now (we’re talking in the ’90s!) so it’s business as usual for us in the south. Shorts season is here and the hotter the better in my opinion. And this past weekend did not disappoint.
On Saturday we did some home stuff that’s been on our to-do list forever. Then we went down to the Chattahoochee River on Sunday to get some sun and watch Bowie splash around like a crazy lunatic. On Monday, it was a lot of relaxing and catching up on a bit of work. What did you do?
Another thing I did this weekend, or rather didn’t do, spent time on my phone or computer. Emails from Friday (my 34th birthday was Thursday so I “gifted” myself an extra long weekend) were left unread. I didn’t post on Instagram or spend a ton of time on Twitter. I really just tried to just unplug and just relax. Things in life have been a little stressful lately and I’m working on a little self-care. And my idea of self-care is time with my boys, couch naps, and red wine. What do you like to do to get your “mind” right when things are stressful in your life? I’d love to hear your tips and tricks for dealing with it all in the comments below.
Simple Ways to Practice Self-Care
In addition to time with my little family, naps, and wine, retail therapy is also one of the simple ways I practice self-care. Now, I don’t do this very often, especially not in 2019. I’ve been pretty good about controlling my spending and reducing my credit card debt. But ya know, when it’s your 34th birthday and you wanna treat yourself, I say go for it. That’s where this white ruffled midi dress comes in. One of my favorite people in all of Atlanta has to be Mandy of Waiting on Martha. In addition to her HOME store, she just opened another brick-and-mortar WOME (Waiting on Martha every day) and it’s amazing.
Her curated collection of the prettiest clothing, accessories, and beauty products is so unique to the city and once you walk into her store, you want it all! I love supporting local businesses, especially women I admire. She was kind enough to give me a little gift card to celebrate her grand opening recently, and I put it towards purchasing this pretty ruffled white sundress. Y’all know I’m a sucker for white in the spring and summer. Whether it’s denim or just pretty feminine looks, give me all the white! Honestly, if I wasn’t such a slob I would have worn this for my birthday dinner out. But I’m a slob, so the white had to stay at home this time.
All in all, no matter the simple ways to practice self-care I think it’s important to remember to just listen to yourself. Something that I think has taken me years to finally realize. You don’t have to keep pushing through and be work work WORK all the time. It’s ok to just be. To do nothing. And that’s ok. Life has a funny way of working out. Or actually, we all just have the ability to adapt to change and struggle better than we give ourselves credit for. At least I hope so. So with that, here’s to hoping 34 brings more self-care, Bowie snuggles, and red wine…of course.
